Does Car Insurance Cover Towing in Florida?
Your car just died on Northlake Boulevard. Before you call a tow, a fair question pops up: will my insurance pay for this? Sometimes yes. Here is how to find out in about five minutes.
Short answer: basic Florida auto insurance does not automatically include towing. You are usually covered only if you added towing or roadside assistance to your policy, or if the tow follows a crash that your collision or comprehensive coverage handles. Check your policy, call your insurer, and keep your tow receipt.
What Florida car insurance usually covers
| Coverage | Does it usually pay for a tow? |
|---|---|
| PIP and property damage liability (the Florida minimum) | Usually no. These cover injuries and damage to others, not your tow. |
| Towing and labor, or roadside assistance (optional add-on) | Usually yes, up to the limits in your policy. |
| Collision | Often covers towing after a covered crash. |
| Comprehensive | Often covers towing after covered events such as theft recovery, flood or fallen trees. |
Every policy is different, so treat this table as a starting point and check the exact wording of yours.
Other places you might already have coverage
- Your car’s warranty. Many newer cars include roadside assistance for a few years.
- Your credit card. Some cards offer roadside help or towing as a perk.
- A roadside membership. If you pay for one, check its towing distance limit.
- Your phone plan or rental agreement. Less common, but worth a look.
How do you get reimbursed for a tow?
- Call your insurer first, if you can, and ask how they want it handled.
- Get a receipt with the date, the pickup and drop-off addresses, the vehicle and the total.
- Take a photo of where the car broke down, if it is safe.
- Submit the receipt to your insurer or plan as they ask.
We give you a clear receipt for every tow, so the paperwork side is easy.
What if you are not covered?
Then the smart move is a straight quote. Call us with the pickup and drop-off addresses, and we will tell you the price before anything is booked. And sometimes you do not need a tow at all: a jump start, a tire change, fuel delivery or a lockout can get you rolling for less.
Is roadside assistance worth adding?
If you drive a lot, drive an older car or spend time on I-95 and the Turnpike, it can be. If you rarely drive or your car is new and under warranty, maybe not. Either way, you can always call a local towing company directly and pay only for what you use.
